Latest News from St Antony's Priory

Coronavirus Update

The Priory remains open for certain activities, including meetings for spiritual direction and retreat accommodation in the cottage.

Unfortunately, all other activities, especially those involving groups, remain suspended until further notice, in line with current restrictions.

As ever, we would expect anyone thinking of visiting the Priory to follow all the official guidance to minimise the spread of the virus.

The Priory underwent extensive refurbishment works during 2019 – have a look at our Facebook page to see the photos. We are now developing a new programme of courses and workshops, as well as establishing a residential community. Who We Are & What We Do

St Antony’s Priory is a Christian spirituality centre in Durham, run by the Society of the Sacred Mission, an Anglican Religious Order established towards the end of the 19th Century.

Today the Priory offers a place for groups and individuals to enjoy spiritual refreshment, as well as providing training in spiritual accompaniment and a variety of other courses and activities. The Cottage guesthouse has four rooms available for people wishing to spend a few days on retreat.

Building on existing work in the training and provision of spiritual directors, retreats and outreach, St Antony’s is now embarking on an exciting new journey, which will include the establishment of a residential praying community and the development of a centre for the study of spirituality.

The aims of the Society of the Sacred Mission refer to increasing the number of those given to the ‘Divine Service’, the ‘Conversion and Perfection of Souls’, and the cultivation of the ‘Divine Science’. Today, we seek to advance those objects by promoting vocation, nurturing faith and spirituality, and encouraging theological learning – hence our strap-line: ‘prayer, study and community’.

Prayer

A rhythm of prayer and contemplation, comprising daily meditation, morning and evening prayer, and a daily Eucharist, to become the beating heart around which everything else revolves.

Study

A centre for the study of spirituality and wisdom traditions, with a specialist library and seminar room to support the development of new courses and workshops to explore and go deeper.

Community

An opportunity for people, at any stage of life, who may be wondering where God might be calling them next, to spend a year immersed in the discipline and structure of a praying community.
